AdBlue Contamination

Throughout Berkshire we have seen a growing number of examples of AdBlue contamination whereby a motorist has put AdBlue inside their diesel tank. This is to a degree due to people not understanding the right way to use it (remember: it's actually not a fuel additive), and to some extent simply because the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are often directly near to each other on the car.

So, exactly what is the situation with having AdBlue in a diesel tank? As AdBlue is mostly deionised water, it is actually just like pouring water into your tank. Diesel and water do not ever mix at all and trying to run a diesel car on water is not going to work. Furthermore, the urea is seriously corrosive to the fuel system pipes and seals and is susceptible to crystallisation, clogging injectors and fuel filters.

If you find you have put AdBlue into a fuel tank get it out at once. And most definitely be careful not to start the car - not even to move it off of the pump. Assuming you did start the vehicle you will very likely have to have the entire fuel system flushed and filters changed.

Water contaminated fuel
