AdBlue In Diesel

Throughout Cheshire we are finding a lot more instances of AdBlue contamination when a driver has poured AdBlue directly into their diesel tank. This is to a degree due to people not understanding the way to use it (pay attention: it is in fact not a fuel additive), and partly due to the fact that the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are usually directly close to one another on the car.

Now, what exactly is the problem with putting AdBlue in a diesel car? Because AdBlue is primarily ionised water, it is nearly as good as putting water into your tank. Diesel and water tend not to mix in the slightest and attempting to run a diesel car on water isn't going to work. Also, the urea is particularly corrosive to fuel system pipes and seals and is more prone to crystalising, obstructing injectors and filters.

If in case you have put AdBlue into a fuel tank remove it as quickly as possible. And most definitely never start the vehicle - not even to move it to a parking area. If you did start the vehicle you would probably have to have the full fuel system purged and filters changed out.

Fuel contaminated with water

Fuel contaminated with water, regardless of whether it is unleaded or diesel, tends to be an important condition to address in a car - particularly in modern common-rail engines. Having water in the diesel or petrol will often contribute to idling problems, uneven running, excessive smoke and, if not addressed correctly, in some cases broken injectors. Having water in petrol is quicker to drain compared to water in diesel - this is mostly because diesel is an oil. Even so we can resolve both situations quite simply.

You should know though that if ever the vehicle was run with the fuel contaminated with water it will more than likely require a new fuel filter fitted simply because the old one will likely be totally water-logged and unusable.
