It was close to seven pm on a Thursday and although we were guaranteed a rainless day, it had not ceased raining! Ryan and I were sitting commenting on the recent rugby results, ready for the seventh fuel drain that day to come in. Finally we had a call from a lovely woman on a company expedition who had gone to the Esso petrol station in Dove Holes and put petrol in a diesel Peugeot lease car in error. The unfortunate thing was somewhat agitated by the sounds of it, stating "I can not believe I've wrecked the car! I'm so accustomed to filling up my petrol car I completely did not remember I was running a diesel!" I asked her to take it easy and not to be concerned, and also that things like this unfortunately can happen. She was able to maneuver the vehicle into a secure space and, seeing that it was just a few minutes from where we were, we could arrive at the customer quickly. The bad fuel was taken out so she was able to get back to the motel she was staying at. Although we got very wet, it was all worth it seeing her drive off contented and much less anxious. One more job in Derbyshire well done in my mind!

AdBlue Contamination

Throughout Derbyshire we are identifying more and more cases of AdBlue contamination wherein a driver has put AdBlue straight into their diesel tank. This is mostly thanks to drivers not understanding the way to use it (pay attention: it is not a fuel additive), and partly due to the fact that the inlets for diesel and AdBlue are generally directly close to one another on the car.

Now, what's the situation with having AdBlue in the diesel tank? Seeing as the product is mostly deionised water, it's as bad as pouring water in to your tank. Diesel and water tend not to blend at all and trying to run a diesel car on water will never work. Additionally, the urea is extremely corrosive to fuel system lines and seals and is more prone to crystallisation, blocking injectors and fuel filters.

In case you poured AdBlue in a fuel tank drain it right away. And most certainly never switch on the car - not even to maneuver it to a parking bay. In the event that you did start the vehicle you will in all likelihood need to have the complete fuel system purged and fuel filters changed out.

Fuel contaminated with water

Fuel contaminated with water, whether it is unleaded petrol or diesel, is actually a significant issue to address in an automobile - specifically in modern day common-rail engines. Having water in your diesel or petrol can easily lead to idling issues, irregular running, excessive smoke and, if not addressed properly, possibly broken injectors. Water in petrol is quicker to clean out as compared with water in diesel - this is primarily due to the fact that diesel is an oil. Having said that we can take care of both cases very expediently.

Take note that so long as the vehicle has been run with the water contamination it will very likely need a new fuel filter to be fitted seeing as the old one is going to be completely wet and unusable.
