AdBlue Contamination

In Lincolnshire we are finding a growing number of cases of AdBlue contamination where a motorist has put AdBlue into their diesel fuel tank. This is to a certain extent due to drivers not knowing how to work with it (remember: it is in reality not a fuel additive), and in part simply because the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are usually directly near to one another on the vehicle.

Well, what exactly is the situation with having AdBlue in your diesel tank? Since AdBlue is predominantly deionised water, it is just like putting water into your tank. Diesel and water really don't blend at all and trying to run a diesel car on water will never work. Moreover, the urea is particularly corrosive to the fuel system lines and seals and is susceptible to crystalising, blocking injectors and filters.

If you put AdBlue in your fuel tank remove it as quickly as possible. And absolutely never switch on the motor - not even to relocate it off of the pump. In case you did start the car you may in all likelihood need to have the complete fuel system cleaned and fuel filters replaced.

Fuel contaminated with water

Water contaminated fuel, no matter whether it's unleaded petrol or diesel, is certainly an important issue to address in a car - specifically in advanced common-rail engines. Putting water inside your fuel can contribute to idling issues, uneven running, excessive smoke and, if it's not dealt with properly, in some cases blown injectors. Water in petrol is easier to get rid of in comparison with water in diesel - mainly because diesel is an oil. Nevertheless we can resolve both cases quite swiftly.

Be aware however that if ever the vehicle has been run on the fuel contaminated with water it will very likely require a new fuel filter to be fitted simply because the previous one will be totally water-logged and unusable.
