AdBlue In Your Diesel

All over Merseyside we are finding more and more cases of AdBlue contamination whereby a person has put AdBlue straight into their diesel tank. This is partly a result of people being unsure of how to to make use of (please note: it's not a fuel additive), and partially because the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are often directly close to one another on the vehicle.

So, what is the issue with having AdBlue in the diesel tank? Seeing as AdBlue is predominantly deionised water, it is actually almost the same as putting water in your tank. Diesel and water will not blend in any way and trying to run a diesel car on water does not work. Apart from this, the urea is highly corrosive to your fuel system pipes and seals and is at risk of crystalising, clogging injectors and fuel filters.

Fuel contaminated with water

Water contaminated fuel, regardless of whether it is unleaded petrol or diesel, is actually a significant situation to address in a motor vehicle - specifically in more modern common-rail engines. Putting water in your petrol or diesel is going to trigger idling problems, uneven running, excessive smoke and, if not addressed fully, potentially damaged injectors. Having water in petrol is less difficult to drain than water in diesel - mostly due to the fact that diesel is an oil. Nevertheless we can deal with both circumstances fairly swiftly.

Bear in mind though that whenever the vehicle was started with the fuel contaminated with water it will more than likely need a new fuel filter to be installed seeing that the old one will be wholly water-logged and useless.

I'm not very interested in carrying out work weekends, and a couple weeks ago was no different. I'd only just departed the family following a magnificent Sunday roast prepared by the better half, and I was on my way to sort out a fellow because he put the wrong fuel in his Mitsubishi. He was stationed in Lydiate therefore it wasn't long before I arrived with him. As I drove up behind the car and got busy draining he explained to me "Thank God! I foolishly had my thoughts on stuff and failed to realise I have put diesel in my petrol vehicle. I need to know if I created some problems simply by starting it?" I determined generally there should not be any problems and that I'd personally get the contaminated fuel drained at once for him. Obviously I removed the contaminated fuel from the car and filled up with some appropriate fuel, and so one more delighted client had the ability to carry on with his travelling without the difficulty. He did not stop thanking me, and that is exactly what can make working on weekends in Merseyside that little better to me!

This was most definitely what is called an unsociable hour to be on the road. It was roughly 2:30am and noone was stirring. It was fairly uneventful until now, and Ray and I were loafing about looking through some old papers. It was an unusual restful time in Merseyside.
