AdBlue In your Fuel

Throughout North Yorkshire we have encountered a growing number of instances of AdBlue contamination wherein a driver has poured AdBlue right into their diesel fuel tank. This is to some extent stemming from people not being aware of the right way to use it (take note: it is not a fuel additive), and partly because the inlets for diesel and AdBlue are often directly adjacent to one another on the vehicle.

Now, precisely what is the matter with putting AdBlue in a diesel tank? As AdBlue is mostly ionised water, it is as bad as pouring water in your tank. Diesel and water do not ever blend in any way and trying to run a diesel car on water cannot work. Apart from this, the urea is highly corrosive to the fuel system lines and seals and is prone to crystalising, damaging injectors and filters.

If you put AdBlue into a fuel tank get it out immediately. And most certainly never turn over the motor - not even to shift it off the pump. Assuming you have started the car you will in all likelihood have to have the entire fuel system cleaned and fuel filters changed.

Fuel contaminated with water

Fuel contaminated with water, regardless of whether it is unleaded or diesel, is actually a serious situation to take care of in a motor vehicle - especially in present-day common-rail engines. Water in the diesel or petrol will produce idling problems, uneven running, increased smoke and, if it is not remedied properly, quite possibly ruined injectors. Having water in petrol is a lot easier to drain as compared with water in diesel - primarily because diesel is an oil. Nevertheless we can resolve both cases very simply.

Bear in mind however that if ever the vehicle has been started with the water contamination it will probably require a new fuel filter fitted as the previous one will be thoroughly wet and unusable.
