AdBlue In Your Diesel

All around Argyll and Bute we are noticing increasingly more instances of AdBlue contamination where an individual has put AdBlue directly into their diesel fuel tank. This is to some extent as a consequence of drivers not knowing the right way to use it (please note: it is in reality not a fuel additive), and partly simply because the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are generally right near to each other on the car.

Now, what's the trouble with putting AdBlue in the diesel tank? Seeing as the product is predominantly ionised water, it is as bad as pouring water in your tank. Diesel and water will not mix at all and trying to run a diesel car on water will not work. Additionally, the urea is seriously corrosive to the fuel system lines and seals and is more prone to crystalising, clogging injectors and fuel filters.

Water contaminated fuel

Fuel contaminated with water, whether it's unleaded petrol or diesel, is actually a significant condition to address in a vehicle - particularly in more modern common-rail engines. Having water in your fuel will likely produce idling problems, irregular running, increased smoke and, if it's not remedied fully, potentially broken injectors. Water in petrol is quicker to remove as compared with water in diesel - this is largely because diesel is an oil. However we can solve both cases fairly quickly.

Keep in mind that as long as the vehicle has been run with the fuel contaminated with water it will likely need a new fuel filter to be fitted seeing that the old one will be totally water-logged and unusable.
